What are Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplants?
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a hair transplant technique and hair restoration surgery where individual hair follicles are extracted from a donor area (typically the back or sides of the head) and moved and transplanted into the area where you’re experiencing thinning hair or balding.
The FUE hair transplantation procedure often offers much more natural results (less of a “hair plug look”) and is less invasive than the previous transplant options.
Why Choose FUE Hair Transplant at Our Fairfax Medical Spa?
Most patients who choose FUE hair transplant surgery are in generally good health, have realistic expectations of treatment, and either have a naturally receding hairline or are balding in the middle of their scalp or around the crown. You will also need to have enough hair to use for the transplant.
Patients typically want the FUE hair transplant procedure because they are losing their hair or experiencing thinning. They may also want a less invasive option to boost hair growth.
What to Expect During Your FUE Hair Transplant Appointment
Procedure:
To start, your hair transplant surgeon will first shave your head in the treatment area to more easily reach and see the hair follicles. They will then cleanse and wash the area to reduce the risk of infection. From there, we will apply a topical numbing agent to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. Your provider then uses a micropunch tool to remove each follicle from the donor area. Finally, they will make tiny incisions in the area where you’re thinning or balding. They will place the donor follicles into these incisions.
Once the area is cleaned and bandaged, you will be able to start your recovery process. The procedure can last anywhere from six to eight hours.
Aftercare:
During your recovery, you will want to avoid washing your hair for at least three days, only use gentle, unscented shampoos for the first few weeks, and avoid combing or brushing for at least three weeks. We also recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity for at least a week. It typically takes 3-4 months before you start noticing results.
Key Benefits of FUE Hair Transplants
No scarring: Unlike FUT transplants, you don’t have to worry about any scarring with FUE transplants. You can cut your hair short without seeing any visible scars.
Faster recovery: FUE also comes with a much shorter recovery time compared to similar surgeries. You will be feeling more like yourself after only three days when the discomfort and swelling subside.
Fuller head of hair: Once the newly transplanted hair follicles have settled, they will start to grow hair and give you the fuller head of hair you’re looking for.
Natural-looking results: You won’t ever have to worry about your new hair looking unnatural or like “hair plugs.”
Less discomfort: FUE transplants also come with much less pain and discomfort compared to FUT (follicular unit transplantation) and other invasive transplant options.

FUE Hair Transplant Frequently Asked Questions
Is a FUE hair transplant permanent?
Yes, FUE hair transplants are considered permanent. Once the hair follicles are transplanted into the treatment area, they are there forever and will give you the fuller head of hair you’re looking for.
Who is a good candidate for FUE hair transplant?
Good candidates for FUE hair transplants at NOVA Concierge Medicine & Aesthetics are patients in good overall health, those with realistic expectations, nonsmokers, and those struggling with hair thinning or balding. You will also need to have enough hair to transplant to the treatment area.
What are the main benefits of FUE transplants?
Some of the main benefits of FUE transplants are that they come with very little downtime, leave very minimal scarring, and provide completely natural-looking results. On top of that, there is less discomfort during the procedure (when compared to other treatment options).
What is the recovery time after an FUE hair transplant?
The initial recovery time after FUE hair transplants at NOVA Concierge Medicine & Aesthetics is about two weeks. That said, it can take several more weeks and multiple treatments before you start to notice hair regrowth.
Will I need to shave my head for FUE?
At NOVA Concierge Medicine & Aesthetics, we will shave the donor area before your FUE treatment. This ensures we can more clearly see the donor area and more easily reach the hair follicles to obtain them and move them to the treatment area.
